The sweet spots of a tennis racquet

چکیده

Measurements are presented on the behaviour of a hand-held tennis racquet when it impacts with a tennis ball. It is shown that an impulse is transmitted through the racquet to the hand in about 1.5 ms, with the result that the hand and the forearm both have a strong in ̄uence on the behaviour of the racquet even while the ball is still in contact with the strings. Regardless of the impact point, the racquet head recoils as a result of the impact and an impulsive torque is applied to the hand, causing the hand to rotate about an axis through the wrist. The impulsive forces on the hand, arising from this torque, do not drop to zero for any impact point, even for an impact at either of the two sweet spots of the racquet. Forces on the hand arise from rotation, translation and vibration of the handle. For an impact at the vibration node, only the vibrational component is zero. For an impact at the centre of percussion, the net force on the hand or forearm is zero since the forces acting on the upper and lower parts of the hand are then equal and opposite.

The effects of ball impact location and grip tightness on the arm, racquet and ball for one-handed tennis backhand groundstrokes.

A torque-driven, 3D computer simulation model of an arm-racquet system was used to investigate the effects of ball impact location and grip tightness on the arm, racquet and ball during one-handed tennis backhand groundstrokes. The stringbed was represented by nine point masses connected to each other and the racquet frame with elastic springs and three torsional spring-dampers between the hand...

Wheelchair Velocity of Tennis Players During Propulsion With and Without the Use of Racquets

To compare the velocity characteristics of wheelchair propulsion with and without the use of a tennis racquet, eight male wheelchair tennis players performed a series of 20m sprints from a stationary start. The maximum velocities reached on average 4.39 ± 0.74 m/s; however, they were reduced by 0.18 ± 0.06 m/s during the racquet condition. Furthermore, when wheeling under the racquet condition,...

A double pendulum model of tennis strokes

The physics of swinging a tennis racquet is examined by modeling the forearm and the racquet as a double pendulum. We consider differences between a forehand and a serve, and show how they differ from the swing of a bat and a golf club. It is also shown that the swing speed of a racquet, like that of a bat or a club, depends primarily on its moment of inertia rather than on its mass. © 2011 Ame...

A scheme for racquet sports video analysis with the combination of audio-visual information

As a very important category in sports video, racquet sports video, e.g. table tennis, tennis and badminton, has been paid little attention in the past years. Considering the characteristics of this kind of sports video, we propose a new scheme for structure indexing and highlight generating based on the combination of audio and visual information. Firstly, a supervised classification method is...

Bounce of a spinning ball near normal incidence

A spinning ball incident at right angles to a surface bounces at an oblique angle and with reduced spin. Consequently, a spinning ball struck head-on does not rebound along its incident path, which presents a control problem in bat and racquet sports. The rebound angle and spin depend in a nontrivial manner on the coefficient of friction between the ball and the surface and on the elastic prope...
